‘Glaze’ is a term that can be applied to the surface treatment of both of these mediums. There is perpetual movement in glaze as the materials are not static, but dynamic, porous, and breathable with time. Glaze continues to move on a pot after firing, watercolour pigments spread or sink and eventually settle with evaporation.

The elemental responses of minerals to fire and water are the fundamental basis for each artist’s work respectively. Nature is co-creator as the work moves from the maker’s hands into the elemental, into the fire, the water, to complete the process. An unfurling that goes beyond the conscious process, the ‘unknown’ is very much a part of both Helen and Anne’s work.

This exhibition is an exploration of the spaces between inhalation and exhalation, between conscious and unconscious process, between intention and happenstance.
