Meet the Volunteer - Joanna Tovia

Volunteers are, and have always been, a vital part of the fabric of Lyttleton Stores - A cooperative run for the community, by the community. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and connect, while also receiving 20% off purchases in our grocery store! There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available and we’re always happy to work with you to find the job that suits you best.

Today, we’re meeting Lyttleton volunteer Joanna Tovia, who does an amazing job helping out all around Lyttleton, and particularly in our kitchen, with prepping, cooking and cleaning.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about yourself!

I’m a journalist, travel writer, parent and photographer who has lived in Lawson for the past 10 years. I also love dogs! My side project, Unfolding Tails, gives me the perfect excuse to accost people and their dogs to take their photos and tell their stories.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering at Lyttleton?

Freelancing can be a bit isolating so I like volunteering at Lyttelton's to mingle with good people and work alongside them – I’m at my happiest when I’m with others. Also, I love how passionate everyone is at Lyttelton's about good food and looking after the planet. It’s what I’m about too.

What do the Blue Mountains mean to you?

I’ve lived in quite a few countries and travel to a lot of places around the world for work, but every time I come home to the Blue Mountains I’m reminded that there’s no place I’d rather be. It’s beautiful, quiet and real, but close enough to the city that I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

Why is volunteering important to you?

I’ve written articles about the benefits of volunteering a few times, interviewing psychologists and life coaches and volunteers. The mental health benefits are huge. We all need to connect with other people and giving just feels good!
