Meet the Maker - Rachel Dengate

Atelier of Lyttleton Stores Cooperative stocks artisan-made wares, from jewellery to stoneware, and monthly exhibitions in our little window gallery. In Atelier everything is designed and made in Australia, if not the Blue Mountains.  The closer to home the better, as we focus on the local craftsperson and local materials. Makers are hand-picked for their creativity, the skill and care they take to make each and every piece, and their preference for environmentally friendly production.

Rachel is the creator of Dengate Leather⤻. Based in the heart of Darug country, she has a keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality, authenticity, and innovation. From intricately crafted accessories to reimagined furniture, each piece is carefully designed and meticulously handcrafted to reflect both her artistic vision and the timeless allure of leather.

You can find Rachel’s products stocked in Atelier at Lyttleton, they make wonderful gifts with the festive season approaching. And we’re particularly pleased to announce that Rachel will also be hosting workshops with us! Sharing her passion, skills and creativity with our community.

Who are you and what do you make?

My name is Rachel, I'm a leather crafter and upholsterer. I have been in love with leather for over thirty years, it is such a diverse medium with endless possibilities. It really ignites my creativity. It is a gift from source, which I respect and honour. I started my business Dengate Leather 12 yrs ago and I  make bags, belts, wallets, stationery, furniture, homewares, jewellery plus lots more.

What do you enjoy making the most?

Each and every part of the process is so satisfying for me and an opportunity to improve my skills. I still get excited when I am finishing up the construction of a piece. I just love seeing people using my creations. I do like working with natural veg tan leathers, you can burnish, dye, emboss, carve, weave, wet mould, skive or paint it, so many possibilities. Recently I've been experimenting with shibori dyeing techniques on leather, it's my new obsession.

What do the Blue Mountains mean to you?

The mountains are magical, vibrant and beautiful. Full of amazing communities and artists and everyone is so supportive and inspirational.

Who is your maker of the minute?

I admire the work of Leather artist Karsten Simmelsgaard from Denmark, he designs innovative items while still using traditional techniques. His work is flawless.
